This mid-20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Anders Hune (1894-1968) depicts the launch of a lifeboat amid treacherous waters. It’s a vivid portrayal that captures the emerging drama.

Hune’s energetic brushwork seems apt for such a scene. With flicks, curves and well-placed daubs, he’s captured this electrifying moment with feeling. Under the expressive brushwork is a skilful composition, which guides our eye from the bottom right, to mid left, to top right. Each element counter-balancing the next and telling its own story. Given the design, it seems plausible that the boat in the top right may be the one needing assistance.

A masterful work with weight, poignancy, and spirited passages.

Hune was born in Aarhus and died in Manchester. He was self-taught and undertook various study trips to France, Italy and Switzerland.

Signed lower middle and framed.
