McAlpine captures this intriguing scene so beautifully especially the detail to the stormy seas, smoke, fire & sky.
Biography of the artist William McAlpine is a known British 19th Century painter. He was active and flourised between 1840 and 1880. William McAlpine''s work has
... been offered at auction multiple times. He has a work in the National Maritime Museum titled A Danish Ship and other vessels Becalmed. Ref sources National Maritime Museum.
This is a rather large fine example of his work, he flourished in this Mid Victorian period. Such an impressive sought after dramatic scene of a tall masted French galleon sailing ship with cannons which is ablaze and floundering on stormy rough choppy seas, one of the masts has already fallen and the other 2 masts are shown in mid-flight collapsing on each other, with plumes of smoke rising and central flames consuming the ship.
Just to the right of the floundering vessel is a longboat with crew escaping, 1 sailor who is clinging for his life in mid-air just above rough choppy seas hanging into a length of rope from the bow front mast pole, he is awaiting rescue from his shipmates in the rescue boat below. A second sailor is also clinking higher up. Further over in the distance you can view land in sight. To the left is some of the fallen ship wreckage floating in the water. On deck are some figures still awating rescue.
Just behind in the background coming into view of another smaller sailing ship heading towards them. Further over in the foreground is another longboat with French flag hoisted on a small single mast. Which is full of surviving sailors onboard who are rowing away from the doomed ship, further back another escaping longboat full of sailors.
This is such a fine example of his work.
