This charming 17th-century still life painting depicts an abundant basket of fruit and vegetables including a lemon, tomatoes, corn and oranges. The basket is positioned atop a ledge with a red silk tablecloth and appears to be outside - with a glimpse of a landscape behind it.

Stylistically, the painting is tricky to place as it fits alongside other 17th-century still lifes from Italy and Flanders. The colouring feels more akin to some Flemish painters yet the composition sits closer to Italian stills. There’s also a great deal of cross over. Similar works have been attributed to the circle of Antwerp painter Joris van Son (1623-1667).

Either way, it's a beautiful piece and so easy to hang in a cottage or country home interior.

Condition: Craquelure but the paint layer is stable. Minor paint loss in the top left. Canvas relined. Later stretcher.
