During the late 18th and early 19th-century, this style of landscape painting was particularly popular as it sought to elevate nature beyond topographical representation. Academy artists studied the 17th-century masters, particularly those of Italy, Flanders and the Netherlands, and adopted compositional techniques to achieve this.
The work is monogrammed SCM but we’ve been unable to trace the artist. However, it’s likely they attended the Academy in Copenhagen and studied alongside Jens Peter Moller (1783–1854).
Signed, dated and held in a 19th-century gilt frame.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Canvas relined. Craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some light wear.
