Description

A beautiful impressionistic portrait of a young lady in a wrap. It’s an extraordinary piece that gives you a little more every time you look at it.

The artist is unknown but it’s clearly by a well-trained hand. Note how they’ve layered the colours under the wrap to create an interesting glow. You can see some of these colours in the bottom right.

The light is also exquisitely observed, particularly on the chin, nose and eyes. And the eyebrows are simply a few confidently applied continuous marks.

The portrait is signed illegibly in the upper right and housed within a later frame.

Year of creation: c. 1915

Provenance: Sweden

Condition: Craquelure, partially due to the way the canvas has been laid on board. The paint seems stable. One raised area with slight discolouration. Frame with some light age-related wear.
