Large Japanese Bronze Bison Okimono by Maruki

Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale Meiji Period 1868-1912, bronze okimono depicting a female bison, this majestic beast has been captured in remarkable detail by the well recorded artist Atsuyoshi whilst working for the highly regarded Maruki company, we have previously featured a few pieces by this combination, usually always large scale and high quality animal subjects. On this occasion the more unusual subject of a huge bison Americas largest land mammal, she has been captured with her head stooped as if grazing, the attention to detail is quite fascinating especially when you consider the artist is unlikely to have ever studied a bison in real life, the bison stands upon its original carved hardwood base perfect for display, alternatively it can free stand on a shelf of your choice, the underside is signed Atsuyoshi within an oval cartouche, alongside the Maruki company seals.

Literature :

This handsome beast was presumably destined for export to the US market in the late 19th century, possibly part of an exhibition promoting the Maruki company at that time, and now some 130 years later we bring it from across the pond to the UK in search of its next home.

Lovely age related patina .
