ANTIQUE #SA951579

Georgian Sampler By Ellen Mulliner

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine example of a late Georgian sampler. The sampler is worked with silk thread on the finest linen. There is a lovely border of trailing honeysuckle with a wonderful arrangement of plants, animals and birds to the centre. The work is given as by Ellen Mulliner, March 23rd, 180… sadly the year is missing. The upper part of the sampler is occupied by the most wonderful verse:

Adam alone in paradise did grieve

And thought Eden a desert without Eve

Until God pitying his lonesome state

Crowned all his wishes with a lovely mate

What reason then has man to slight or flout her

Who could not live in paradise without her.

The sampler is in good condition, the silks are bright but there is the odd minor hole. The faded oak frame is probably not the original but works very well. A fine example of a sampler with a great period look and gentle decorative impact. C.1800.

Overall sizes in inches, including frame: 15 ¼ by 19
