Silver Point Drawing by Charles Prosper Sainton Ri

A fine silver point drawing of a lady looking in a mirror, by Charles Prosper Sainton. Silver point was a technique of drawing with a solid silver pencil, and was championed by Sainton. The drawing is of a beautiful lady, probably a dancer, as this was one of his favourite subjects, who is at her toilette in a mirror, hence the title. The work is signed and dated 1893 and is mounted in the original lovely quality silvered frame.

Charles Posper Sainton, was the son of the violinist and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, Proseper Philippe Sainton, his mother was the famous contralto Helen Dolby and Charles was born in 1860, he did not follow in his fathers footsteps but studied art, at the Slade, and in Florence and Paris, he went on to become a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and he was one of the leading exponants of silver point etching, a collection of which is owned by the Royal Family and kept at Sandringham. He exhibited widely with 5 works in The Royal Academy summer exhibitions.
