Dated May 1885, presumably the completion date.

This type of embroidery and patchwork was apparently inspired by the crazed finish of Japanese ceramics and the asymetric form of the furniture, newly exhibited in Europe from the late 1860s.

The colours are rich and fabulously vivid, three small red silk panels near the centre (of the same fabric) have deteriorated, all others in excellent condition.
