Charlie Johnson Payne, Snaffles (British, 1884-1967)
‘Blood and Quality’, circa 1910, signed ‘Snaffles’, dated (19)10 and titled ‘Blood and Quality’ in watercolour, pencil and watercolour, in the original gilt slip mount and reeded oak frame.
Dimensions: 36 x 30cm (excluding mount and frame) 43.5 x 38cm overall
Provenance: Private Collection, UK.
This is a rare early original watercolour; painted for the print of the same title published by Lawrence and Jellicoe in 1910, as one of a set of ‘Four Hunting Types’. This set of prints were hugely popular and successful, and appear to have been a turning point in the artist’s career. The gentleman sitter is Lord Ranksborough.
