This beautiful early 20th-century watercolour by British artist Walter Stuart Lloyd (1845-1929) depicts a picturesque view of Wooten Creek on the Isle of Wight.

Lloyd’s masterly handling captures the light sublimely as it shimmers atop the gentle ripples of the Solent. Two weary fishermen are bringing home the catch as the last embers of the day create a warm haze above rustic cottages.

Lloyd hailed from Brighton and loved painting along the south coast. He worked primarily in watercolours and at the age of 20 became the youngest elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists. As a young man, his talent was recognised by the press which celebrated his ability and during the 1870s, he trained at Bonnat’s studio in Paris. Many of his works feature groups of people working in various waterways under a majestic sky.

During his lifetime, Lloyd’s works were exhibited at several prominent exhibitions including the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and Grosvenor Galleries. Today, he’s represented in numerous public collections, such as Salford Museum and Art Galleries and Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum.
