A fine and decorative oil on canvas titled ‘In the woods’ by Henry Hadfield Cubley 1858-1934. The scene depicts a woodland setting with faggot gatherers. The work is typical for the artist with an almost impressionist feel and use of large brushstrokes quickly applying paint. The scene is located on the reverse as Dorrington in Shropshire, though it also lists Woore in the same county this is probably because that is where he was staying at the time. The work is typically signed to the lower left. The painting is in good condition and has had some restoration in the past as evidenced by the patches on the reverse. The restoration has been very expertly done and is not visible from the front. Henry Hadfield Cubley was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire and was the nephew of the influential landscape painter William Cubley.
