Description

An interesting, lightly cubist landscape which has a slightly surrealist, unearthly feel to it...as is so often the case with works from the 1940s. Painted on roughly hewn canvas, it is very much a witness of its time.

The painting is a work by Helène Lamourdedieu (1905-2003), daughter of the sculptor Raoul Lamourdedieu.

Hélène studied at the studio of Marguerite Jeanne Carpentier in an all-woman class.

She became a member of the "10th Group" of artists, with who she exhibited at the Petit Palais in Paris in 1935. Hélène also regularly showed her work at the Salon des Tuileries. Between 1933 and 1940, the French State acquired three of her paintings.

After the work, Hélène had one man shows at the Galerie André Weil on Avenue Montaigne in Paris receiving rave reviews, and at the Galerie Marbach in Berne, Switzerland.

Our oil on canvas measures 38 x 46 cm, and is signed and dated at the lower right. The overall size in its period frame is 53 x 62 cm.
