Oil on Board of the Connoisseur by a Ribas

Oil on board of fine quality, showing a georgian gentleman admiring a large peice of oriental porcelain. The gentleman is shown in exquisite detail in mid eighteenth century costume, the work of light and shade on his silk jacket is beautiful as is the technique on the embroidered waistcoat and lace cravatte, his face is shown in deep concentration on the workmanship of the vase. The vase itself a large chinese famille verte wase again worked beautifully with the reflection from the windows on it, sits on a hard wood stand and is full of pampas grasses. The setting is a rich palace hung with tapestries which can be seen softle in the background.

Signed by A. Ribas who is a Spanish artist from the early part of the twentieth century, little known or recorded, my research has only shown that another work by him was sold in New York in April 2009 and made $4000.

The painting is in excellent condition all round and is mounted in a modern frame in a silvered blackened finish.
