A fine oil on canvas cottage scene signed L.Richards a pseudonym of the artist Daniel Sherin. The landscape is that of the quintessential English thatched cottage, nestled next to a lane with a figure feeding chickens under the bluest of skies. The technique is superbly confident with a broad use of the brush and wonderful handling of colour. The whole is in excellent condition, having been professionally cleaned and a pinprick hole repaired. The work is signed to the lower right of the canvas ‘L.Richards’ this was a pseudonym of the highly regarded artist Daniel Sherin (1868-1940). Daniel Sherin was an English painter best known for his depictions of landscapes, maritime scenes, and the countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk. His work is highly detailed, describing objects such as ships and cattle accurately while maintaining a sense of light and atmosphere. He was a follower of and owes much of his style to the great Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923). This work is framed in a period gilt frame with original silver gold gilding. The frame has had some restoration and replacement of moulding. The whole is a great example of this most English type of painting, by a great artist and is ready to hang. C.1910.
