Striking Portrait Oil by Norman Leslie Hall

A enigmatic, unusual and slightly captivating portrait of a man, by Norman Leslie Hall. The figure of a middle aged man, is shown strikingly looking directly out of the picture with his hair brushed dramatically over his head, he is shown wearing white robes, which leads me to believe he is a white friar of the Carmelite order, the white robes are contrasted with the dark green of the background, and the whole makes an intriguing work, not to mention that the quality of the work and technique are of the highest standard. The canvas is signed lower right; 'no1 Hall 1935' and on the revers is a label reading;

The frame which the painting is in and is the original is of the finest quality for the period, reflecting an early eighteenth century carved frame but with a multilayered and textured finish, the frame bears the makers label of Chapman Bros, Chelsea.

The painting has been a real enigma to me, the quality of the work, the framing and the labelling to the reverse means that this must have been an exhibited painting, but i can find no record of the artist Norman Leslie Hall, the technique and style of the picture, bare reference to the Slade School, but again i can find no direct reference. The only mention of the artist that i have found is in regards to having been at Cambridge University and having received a medal in World War Two, which leads me to surmise that he either went to War then gave up art or as i believe, he went to war and was sadly killed like many of his generation, a sad thought that such a potentially interesting artist's career was cut short.
