Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares made in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped through the port of Imari. Produced primarily from the late seventeenth century onwards, it is characterized by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gilded decoration.

These chargers are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures. The design involves underglaze cobalt blue brushwork followed by a glaze firing, after which overglaze enamels, such as iron red, green, and gold, are painted on and fired in a lower-temperature muffle kiln.

Authentic pieces often feature spur marks on the base from kiln support, slight asymmetry in hand-painted details, and wear on the unglazed foot rim. The cobalt blue typically shows subtle variations in depth, and overglaze enamels may display light surface wear consistent with age.

An Imari charger can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using a wooden or brass plate stand, or mounted as part of a curated gallery wall. The vibrant red and blue hues create a striking focal point when set against neutral or deeply painted walls.
