Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics manufactured in the Arita region of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. Characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gilt detailing, this style gained widespread popularity across Europe from the late seventeenth century onwards.

Traditional Imari wares are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay to create a durable porcelain body. The decoration relies on underglaze cobalt blue application prior to the primary firing, followed by hand-painted enamel glazes in iron-red and gold applied during subsequent lower-temperature kilns.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted irregularities, subtle spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and a slightly bluish glaze tone. Overglaze enamels often exhibit slight surface elevation or gentle age-related rubbing, contrasting with flat, uniform modern reproductions.
