Description

A beautifully hand‑painted Japanese Imari plate, decorated in the classic palette of cobalt blue, iron red and soft gilt touches. The central motif features a stylised floral arrangement, framed by alternating rim panels of blossoms and geometric reserves — a harmonious balance of colour and pattern typical of traditional Imari ware. The reverse carries a simple blue mark within double concentric rings.

Vibrant, decorative and full of character, this is a lovely example of export Imari with strong display presence.

Imari porcelain is a historic style of Japanese export ceramic originating from the Arita area and exported via the port of Imari, defined by its palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and gilded floral motifs.

Imari wares are crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The blue decoration is applied as an underglaze before the initial firing, followed by iron-red enamel and gold leaf applied over the glaze during subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces feature slight hand-painted irregularities in the cobalt and enamel work, visible spur marks on the unglazed foot rim, fine hand-applied gilding, and light surface wear consistent with age.

Imari porcelain is commonly displayed mounted on walls in symmetry, positioned on wooden plate stands atop consoles, or arranged inside glazed cabinetry to provide colour, history, and intricate pattern.
