Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese ceramic export ware produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped to Europe, it is recognised for its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red and gilded enamelling.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, fired initially with underglaze cobalt blue decoration. Overglaze iron-red enamels, coloured glazes, and gold leaf or paint are subsequently applied and fired at a lower temperature in secondary kiln cycles.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted variations rather than modern transfer prints, showing subtle brushwork irregularities. Examining the reverse often reveals spurs marks from kiln firing, underglaze blue rim rings, and an unglazed foot rim consistent with historical production techniques.

Imari porcelain pairs well with traditional timber furniture and modern minimalist settings alike. Display plates vertically on acrylic stands on a sideboard top, assemble them on a feature gallery wall, or place them inside lit glazed cabinets to highlight their intricate patterns.

Clean antique porcelain gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemicals, or dishwashers, as overglaze enamels and gilding can wear away easily under harsh conditions.
