Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped from the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gold gilding.

It is crafted from fine kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures, then decorated with underglaze cobalt blue before a glaze firing, followed by overglaze enamel painting and gilding fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted variations in the line work, slight irregularities in the glaze, spur marks on the base, and characteristic colour palettes of underglaze blue, iron red, and delicate gold accents.

A large Imari plate can be displayed upright on a wooden easel stand on a sideboard, mounted on a feature wall, or styled inside a glass display cabinet to add historic contrast to modern spaces.
