Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramicware made in the Arita region of Hizen Province and historically exported via the port of Imari, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, orange, and decorative enamels.

These ceramics are formed from fine kaolin porcelain clay fired at high temperatures, followed by the application of underglaze cobalt blue painting, additional enamel pigments, and overglaze gilding in secondary firings.

Authentic pieces frequently display hand-painted panelled designs, minor organic variations in paint application, spur marks on the underside from kiln support, and a distinct palette of deep cobalt blue, terracotta red, and white space.

An Imari plate can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using a plate stand, mounted on a gallery wall alongside complementary artwork, or set inside a glazed display cabinet to introduce pattern and vibrant colour.
