Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the seventeenth century, taking its name from the port of Imari where it was exported to Western markets. It became widely sought after across Europe for its distinctive palette and detailed decorative schemes.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay porcelain, fired at high temperatures for durability. The decoration involves underglaze cobalt blue painting followed by overglaze enamel colours, including iron-red and green, often complemented by gilt highlights.

Authentic pieces display characteristic underglaze blue and overglaze enamel application, subtle irregularities in the hand painting, and light spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports. The glaze often exhibits soft wear consistent with age rather than uniform modern machine finishes.
