Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century via the port of Imari. These ceramics gained international prestige for their distinctive colour palette, blending underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilt highlights.

Traditional Imari ware was crafted from local kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The production process involved painterly underglaze cobalt application, high-temperature firing, followed by meticulous hand-painting of enamels and gold leaf before a lower-temperature enamel firing.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of hand-painted variations, subtle spur marks on the base from kiln support, and wear to the surface gilding. The glaze often exhibits a slight bluish-white tint rather than a bright, stark white modern finish.

Decorative plates can be styled on acrylic or timber display stands atop sideboards and consoles, or arranged in symmetrical wall groupings. Their rich colour palette complements both dark wooden furniture and contemporary neutral backdrops.
