Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari, traditionally characterized by underglaze cobalt blue combined with iron-red enamel and gilding.

These ceramics are crafted from kaolin ceramic clay, painted with cobalt oxide prior to primary firing, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamels such as iron-red before a second lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-painted brushwork with minor natural irregularities, spur marks on the base, a greyish-white porcelain body, and minor surface wear to the overglaze enamels.
