Masterpiece: The Couple, 1907 Avant Garde Bloomsbury Group Artist Cubist Jean Hippolyte Marchand Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

One of the leading artists of his generation. Jean Marchand (1882-1941) was fauve and cubist painter, printmaker and illustrator who became closely linked to the Bloomsbury Group.

In 1910, his painting Still Life with Bananas was exhibited in the 1910 "Manet and Post-Impressionism" show organised by Roger Fry, also shown in 1912 in a second exhibition organised by Fry with Clive Bell at the Grafton Galleries in London. What is exciting is that our lightly cubist painting painting, with its dynamic, streamlined composition, dates from precisely this early period: it is truly a first generation modernist work.

The painting has excellent provenance,: it was purchased in 1974 from Crane Kalman Galleries in London, where a major retrospective of Jean Hippolyte Marchand's work was organised in 1967. We can date our painting to 1907 since Marchand painted a second, analogous painting of figures and a loge that year, which was dated and which also was sold through Crane Kalman. Both paintings may have been part of a small series of works on the theatre or the opera.

Paintings by Jean Marchand are in the collections of the Courtauld, the Tate, and in numerous museums in Britain and worldwide. The National Gallery of Ireland owns five oils by Marchand. In France, works by the artist are in the Museum of Modern art of the City of Paris as well as in the Museums of Lyon, Marseille, Troyes, Grenoble, Céret, Besançon and Saint Tropez.

Our oil on board measures 27 x 36 cm, and is signed at the lower left. Presented in its original frame, the overall size is 59 x 57 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
