This charming mid-19th-century British school portrait depicts a gentleman wearing a white shirt, black necktie and smart black frock coat. His style fits with the fashion of the later 1840s when facial hair became more popular than the earlier part of the decade.

The work is unsigned but clearly by a competent hand. The brushwork has been laid down quite quickly in an effort to retain the sitter’s spirit. It’s a little reminiscent of the English artist Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) who inspired so many during the first half of the 19th century.

The portrait is held within a fine gilt frame with foliate.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Craquelure but the paint is stable. Canvas relined. Frame with some light wear.
