Pair Of Victorian Baxter Prints In Maple Frames

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very interesting and decorative pair of Baxter prints depicting the ill-fated missionary voyage of Rev.J.Williams to Tanna (Rarotonga, New Hebrides). The scenes which are shown in great detail show the Reverend arriving in Tanna bearing European gifts and then his demise at the hands of the local population. George Baxter was the man who perfected colour printing and here he uses it to memorialise his friend. The prints are in good antique condition, there is some fading and foxing. The pair are mounted in the original bird’s eye maple frames which are in excellent condition and have a wonderful colour and patina. C.1841.
