Seascape Oil Painting by Charles Herbert Thompson

A fine oil on artist board seascape painting by Charles Herbert Thompson (1870-1946). The scene depicts dramatic waves breaking on the Cornish coast while a lone seagull flies low looking for a meal. The complex nature of the sea and waves, the various colours and textures are wonderfully captured in thick impasto oils. The piece is signed to the lower right ‘C.H.Thompson’ and dated 1929. The painting is in good untouched condition with no signs of restoration. The frame is not the original but is of the period and in excellent untouched condition.

Charles Herbert Thompson 1870-1946 is a highly regarded marine, landscape and portrait artist who was based for the majority of his career in Cornwall, although for a while he took on the prestigious role of the first curator of the Watts Gallery in Guildford. He exhibited between 1894-1937 including ten times at the Royal Academy as well as at the Walker Gallery Liverpool.

The painting has a great period look and is full of the atmosphere of the sea. It is ready to hang.
