THE ARTIST: In early life Hermanus Koekkoek II (1836-1909) studied with his father (also Hermanus Koekkoek), and painted mainly seascapes. Later in life, when living in London, he devoted himself to the Art trade and when painting mainly used one or other of his pseudonyms J. van Couver or (as in this case) Louis van Staaten. This name is internationally recognised as a pseudonym and he used it often to help distinguish his work from that of the many other artists in his family called Koekkoek. In later life he moved often between London, and Holland. Whilst in England he exhibited at the Royal Academy; The New Gallery and Manchester City Art Gallery.
