This charming 19th-century landscape painting by British artist George William Mote (1832-1909) depicts an extensive view across Enfield, North London. It’s a fine work with plenty of interest and gives you a little more each time you return.

In the foreground, our eyes are immediately drawn to a sizeable flock of oncoming sheep meandering up the track. While three cows rest ahead of them close to a broken fence. Did these cows escape much to the distress of the farmer?

On the left, a family appears to be picnicking, with the mother dressed in an eye-catching red top and yellow hat. The father looks beyond the sheep, shielding his eyes from the sun, surely mesmerised by this vast ocean of wool.

Mote has cleverly provided us with an elevated view, which delivers a good vantage point over the animals and town. He was well-versed in traditional vistas and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. In 1867, a year after this was produced, he moved to London and often captured views in the countryside around the capital.

Signed, dated and held in a beautiful ornate gilt frame.
