Description

This 20th-century oil on canvas by Danish artist Carl Forup (1883-1939) depicts two figures working tirelessly in a field. Both are making hay.

Through the centre of the composition, we see the hero of the piece, a woman wearing a headscarf, red cheeks, puffing from exertion. With her front foot firmly planted and arm extended, she creates a strong triangular form. Forup is conveying her unswerving dedication by focusing on her posture. Note how the triangle seems fixed and permanent. Unbreakable - much like her spirit.

Behind her, a male figure further emphasises her shape by leaning away. He dressed in white, which provides contrast.

The artist respected these weary haymakers and sought to emphasise the pride in their endeavours.
