Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A large oil on wooden panel village scene by Henry Hadfield Cubley 1858-1934. The painting is titled on the reverse: ‘A Somersetshire village’ and shows a village lane with figures which is dominated by a large tree casting dappled light. The work is done in a loose quick style concentrating on light and colour. The painting is in good untouched condition and is mounted in a fine quality modern gilt frame. Henry Hadfield Cubley was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire and was the nephew of the influential landscape painter William Cubley. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and in Birmingham, his style was impressionistic and atmospheric. A very commercial artist he painted many highland scenes for this popular Victorian market. This is a large and decorative work by the artist of an unusual subject. The painting is ready to hang. Signed to the lower left and dated on the reverse 1933.
