A very large and impressive watercolour by Joseph Harold Swanwick (1866 - 1929) depicting a beach and coastal view on the Isle of Man. A fantastic composition, titled ‘The Last Gleam, Silver Strand, North of Peel, Isle of Man’. Overall dimensions including frame are 150cm x 101cm. Signed lower right.

Joseph Harold Swanwick was born in Middlewich, Cheshire, son of the doctor and amateur artist Joseph Powell (qv). He studied in Liverpool, London and Académie Julian, Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1889 and was an elected member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (1898) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1909). He lived in Wilmington, Sussex from 1909 until his death in 1929.

His work is held in several public collections including: Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Reading Museum and the York Museums Trust, as well as the British Museum.
