This fine pair of mid-Victorian portraits by German artist Johann Paul Georg Fischer (1786-1875) depict a smartly-attired couple. She wears a demure light blue dress with a decorative floral bonnet. While he wears a black suit with a light blue waistcoat. Given the style of the outfits, they date to around 1865.

Fisher was an accomplished artist and several of his works are held in the collection at Windsor Castle. Born in Hanover, he spent most of his life working in England, primarily London and Cheltenham, and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1817-1852. Note how he portrays the subtleties of the subjects’ expressions with delicate brushwork to capture every nuance.

The portraits are a little tired but still convey the character of this charming husband and wife.

Signed in the lower right and held within their original gilt frames.

Condition: Tired. Various areas of foxing and age-related yellowing. Frames with some wear including minor losses.
