This atmospheric 19th-century oil painting by British artist George Peploe Brown (1840-1909) depicts a chapel in Toledo Cathedral, Spain. Three figures kneel at the ironwork gates with a glimpse of the altar beyond them. The sacred Gothic architecture is captured with a sense of sobriety. It’s sombre, silent and reflective.

Seven years prior to completing this work, Brown tragically lost his wife Harriette Wilberforce Brown (nee Bird) and he never truly recovered. It seems that travelling helped to ease his heart and he found particular solace in the spirit and warmth of Spain. Perhaps the awe-inspiring interiors of Spanish cathedrals provided a degree of celestial comfort.

Signed/titled and dated. Held within a fine gilt frame with a reeded border and leaves to the corners.
