This fine mid-19th-century landscape painting by British artist John Wallace Tucker (1808–1869) depicts three figures amid a deep river gorge. The impressive ruins of a medieval castle dominate the view as the light subsides with romantic poignancy.

Where do you think this is? It’s tempting to say Italy - particularly given the subject and stylistic nuances of the design. However, it’s probably somewhere in Britain, maybe Wales or Exmoor. Tucker was well-versed in Italianate landscapes having studied the old masters yet preferred to paint the scenery around him. It’s possible that he imagined (or elaborated) the ruins on the cliff but the view was taken from nature.

Another version of this painting (potentially the same painting) sold at Bonhams in 1999. It was one of a pair and reached £2,600.

Held within a scroll and foliate pierced frame.
