A stunning cubist still life with a guitar by French artist and dadaist designer Jacques Carelman (1929- 2012).

Carelman came to Paris in 1956, to devote himself to painting and sculpture, to stage and costume design for the theatre. and to book illustrations. He is particularly well known for his "Catalogue of Impossible Objects" , which he subsequently made and exhibited world-wide. Have you heard of them? To give you an idea, one he most famous items is the "Coffeepot for Masochists": a coffeepot with a backwards facing spout that would scald the user!

A founder-member of the Oupeinpo, Carelman was Regent of the College of 'Pataphysics, holding the chair in Helicology. He is also the author of one of the most emblematic posters of May 1968, which depicts a CRS (anti riot) policeman.

A man of many talents, Carelman's painting has of late been rediscovered. It is exciting to know that a few cubist still lives from 1959 - the same in year in which the painting presented here was painted - have recently sold for four figure sums at Christies. I am attaching extracts of the catalogue entries, as it is fun to see that these paintings feature some of the same objects that you see in our work.

Our oil on canvas measures 65 x 54 cm and is signed and dated at the lower right. It is titled by the artist on the verso. The overall size in an elegant frame is 81 x 70 cm. Frame with light wear and tear. .
