Victorian Naïve Oil Painting Portrait of a Lady

A fine oil on canvas portrait oil of a lady in the naïve folk-art manner. The lady is shown half-length and seated, with a black dress embellished with lace and a wonderful pink bow. She has in her hair a simple arrangement of flowers and lace. The work has a charming naïve quality and is reminiscent of American portraiture of the nineteenth century. The painting is on an English canvas, an early Winsor and Newton one, and this dates the work to the very Early Victorian period. The painting has been professionally cleaned and had a few small holes repaired, these repairs have gone in very well and are not obvious from the front. The portrait is framed in a period Victorian gilt frame of good quality which has been over-gilt at some point but still has a great country house look. The whole has a big decorative impact and a wonderful folk-art appeal and it is ready to hang. C.1840.
