If you tend to think of floral still lives as easy and plain vanilla, think again - when painted by Dan Solojoff, they are is positively eye popping.

Art critic Waldemar George, calls Solojoff's colours "phosphorescent hues" and describes his paintings as "pictorial poems" - which indeed they are!

Like the work of his fellow countryman Marc Chagall (who Solojeff met in Cannes), it is defined by both surrealism and neo-primitivism.

Dan Solojoff was born Daniil Andreyevich Solojef in St. Petersburg in February 1908. He left Russia in 1920 and initially stayed in Bessarabia. In 1944, he was deported with his wife to a forced labor camp in Germany. He arrived in France in 1945, settling initially in Lyons, then in Paris.

In Lyons, he participated in the Salon of the Lyon Society of Fine Arts, where he successively won a bronze, silver and gold medels.

From 1956, he would have annual one man shows at the avant-garde Katia Granoff Gallery in Paris. He would continue to show his work at the Rotterdamsche Kunstring in the Netherlands, The Chases gallery in New York, the Galerie Madiart in Zurich, the Euro Graphic in Kassel, and at other exhibitions worldwide.

Our surrealist floral still life, a gouache painting on paper, dates from the 1950s-60s. It is signed and situated "Paris" at the lower left. Measuring 38 x 47 cm at sight, the overall framed size is 54 x 65 cm. The gallery frame is at present unglazed, so to facilitate safe shipping, but glass can be added.
