This painting is a wonderful snapshot of life in village on the French Riviera in the 1940s. On the street leading down to the azure blue sea, we see a number of figures:

a sailor taking to a lady who has put a chair out on the street, a flirting couple, and several passers-by. It is a work by Henri Joseph Edouard Bargin (Paris 1906-Antibes 1978), an artist who was not only a painter, but also a talented actor who filmed with André Hugon and Alexandre Korda in the 1930s.

The painting presented here dates from the 1940s, and is painted in the manner typical of the mediterranean artists, with a paint knife rather than with a brush. The oil on canvas is signed at the lower right, and measures 38 x 46 cm. It is presented in its original hand carved patinated wooden frame, which has some wear and tear. The overall framed size is 57 x 64 cm.
