Naïve Victorian Watercolour Portrait

A charming watercolour full length profile portrait of a lady. The work has a folk-art feel and yet is also very accomplished, particularly in the detail of the face. The piece is worked in watercolour and highlighted on the black dress with gum Arabic to denote the folds in the fabric. The piece is in excellent condition and signed Huston to the lower right with the date of 1853. The rosewood frame is the original with a good figuring, colour and patina. The whole is a great example of provincial portraiture with a wonderful naïve folk-art look and it is ready to hang.
