A superb folk art Shire horse oil painting. The work of a typically naļve style depicts a black Shire horse in stable setting. The title on the reverse shows the name of the horse to be ‘Nailstone Coeur de Lion’. The painting is in excellent condition and is signed and dated to the lower left ‘M.Atkinson 1901’. The artist will have been a local amateur or itinerant artist specialising in portraying prize livestock. The work retains the original gilt frame that is in very good condition. The whole is a superb example of naļve folk art animal portraiture and a rare example of a Shire horse.
