Dancing 1925 – Hungarian Artists in the Parisian Night
28 April – 28 August 2022
cabinet exhibition
Art Deco, the trend in applied arts and architecture that emerged following the cataclysm of World War I, was one of the major movements of the 1920s, holding sway all over Europe and the United States. Not only did it appear in the arts, but it also defined the lifestyle and general spirit of an entire era. Nightlife, modern entertainment, bars and clubs were depicted just as decoratively in Art Deco drawings and prints as modern machines, automobiles, airplanes and tumultuous cities. The focal point of the exhibition is Dancing, a graphic art album by Marcell Vértes, evoking scenes from a night in Paris. Marcell Vértes, a Hu
...ngarian illustrator and graphic artist, arrived in Paris in the early 1920s and published his album of twelve lithographs in 1925, the year of the Paris Exposition, with its sheets showing jazz bands, dancing crowds, extravagant couples, elegant ladies and gentlemen as well as scenes of cleaning up after parties at dawn and the dispiriting journey home. This unique series from Hungarian art of the period, a resounding success already in its day, will be displayed in its entirety for the first time.
