One of the leading artists of his generation. Jean Marchand was fauve and cubist painter, printmaker and illustrator who became closely linked to the Bloomsbury Group.

In 1910, his painting Still Life with Bananas was exhibited in the 1910 "Manet and Post-Impressionism" show organised by Roger Fry, also shown in 1912 in a second exhibition organised by Fry with Clive Bell at the Grafton Galleries in London. What is exciting is that our painting, with its audacious colours and composition, dates from precisely this period: it is truly a first generation modernist work.

In 1915, Clive Bell wrote: ‘No living painter is more purely concerned with the creation of form and the emotional significance of shapes and colours than Marchand". Our work is beautifully illustrates this statement.

Crane Kalman Galleries in London organised a major retrospective of Jean Hippolyte Marchand in 1967.

Paintings by the artist are in the collections of the Courtauld, the Tate, and in numerous museums in Britain and worldwide. The National Gallery of Ireland owns five oils by Marchand.

The work presented here has prestigious provenance. Already deemed exceptional in 1924, it was exhibited that year at the "Hôtel de la Chambre syndicale de la curiosité et des beaux-arts" in Paris. In the exhibition, major collectors such as Sacha Guitry, the Princess of Bassiano, Henry et Marcel Kapferer (whose portrait by Vuillard is a masterpiece), Marcel Monteux (a patron of Soutine and Utrillo), showed their favourite pieces. All proceeds of the exhibition went to the Friends of the "Musée du Luxembourg". Remnants of the exhibition label are on the back of the stretcher.

Our oil on canvas measures 38 x 46 cm, and is signed at the lower left. Presented in its original Louis XV style frame, the overall size is 50 x 59 cm.
