A joyous and exuberant harvest still life with fruit and wheat, by French woman artist Edmée Larnaudie,

Edmée Larnaudie started painting and sketching at a young age, and, upon de recommendation of artist René Prinet, was admitted to study painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts in 1932. She studied with Fernand Sabatté, and as well as with the great Nabis Maurice Denis.

Along with numerous other prizes, Edmée was awarded, in 1937, the Second Great Prize of Rome - while there was a general consensus that she amply deserved the First Prize! Astoundingly, her fellow students even took to the streets to demonstrate on Edmée's behalf, against the misogyny of the Director of the Academy.

While Edmée exhibited her paintings at the Parisian Salons, she also did costume and set design of the Paris Opera Houses.

She was commissioned to do frescos for the Talence town hall, and for the art deco Post Office on the rue de Chaillot in Paris.

Works by Edmée Larnaudie are now notably in the collection of the Musée Henri Martin in Cahors, where there is an entire room dedicated to the artist!

The oil on canvas by Edmée Larnaudie presented here dates from the 1950s or 60s and comes from the artist's estate. The picture has stable craquelure, and was posthumously mounted on to a stretcher. It is signed with the estate stamp at the lower right, as well as on the stretcher bars.. Measuring 50 x 61 cm, it is presented in a simple makeshift frame, which nonetheless suits the work well. The framed size is 53 x 64 cm.
