Description

A luminous and sun filled view of the tranquil harbour of Saint Tropez, when the village on the French Riviera was still a quiet backwater. If artist Germain Raingo-Pelouse (1893-1963) had a particular gift for depicting light, it is perhaps because it was part of the family tradition: Germain was Claude Monet's great nephew!

Having studied with Fernand Cormon and Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, Germain Raingo Pelouse showed his work at the Salon des indépendants from 1912, served as a pilot during World War 1, and exhibited at the Galerie Visconti from 1921. Several of the artist's paintings were acquired by the French State, and a retrospective exhibition took place at the Museum of Vernon (near Giverny) in 1949.

The oil on hardboard presented here is signed at the lower left. It is situated Saint Tropez and inscribed with the artist's Paris address on the verso. Measuring 50 x 71 cm, the overall size including an elegant frame is 67 x 85 cm.
