Interesting realist genre painting in oil on canvas by the Provencal French artist Charles Magnier (1883 – 1950) c.1920. Below a pale dusk sky a woman in a red headscarf stands on a hillside with two goats grazing as a figure carrying a large pack walks away from her and towards the sea. Painted with muted colours in a very thick impasto style oils. Signed C. Magnier in the lower right hand corner. Good condition (would doubtless benefit from a clean), presented as found, unframed on a simple wooden stretcher.

An interest in the often very hard lives of ordinary people was a feature of the late 19th Realist movement inspired by artist such as Courbet and Millet and was a notable shift in mood from the idealised view of peasant life often found in tradition genre painting.
