This poignant late-19th-century etching by British artist Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942) depicts a lady sitting by an open window. At her feet, a loyal bloodhound looks forlorn - his expression reveals more than hers.

The title of the work, ‘Anxious Hearts’, brings context to this enchanting scene. They’re both patiently waiting for the return of a loved one. When will they arrive home? Will they ever be reunited?

Dicksee was an experienced etcher and particularly adroit at depicting animals. Oftentimes, he would include a faithful old pet as a symbolic reference for a feeling or emotion. Note the contrast here, the lady holding back the true extent of her concern, while her dog is gripped by loss.

The etching was published in 1899 by the Fine Arts Society and a version was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1900.

Signed in the lower right in pencil and framed.
