In the foreground, a lone figure rests upon the riverbank, perhaps fishing with a line. He’s under an old birch, which provides shade from the midday sun. Beyond him, the view extends through several layers - each affected uniquely by the light.
Poole was a master at capturing nature’s restful moods. He enjoyed many of Britain’s uplands including parts of Yorkshire, the Lake District and North Wales. His landscapes convey a poetic quality and a sense of peaceful solitude.
Signed in the lower right and housed within a fine Rococo revival frame.
